Overview
Rai 3 is the third national television channel of RAI, Italy’s public service broadcaster. Within the RAI portfolio it occupies a distinctive position, with a schedule weighted towards culture, current affairs, investigative journalism, documentaries and regional programming. The channel is often regarded as the most editorially serious of RAI’s generalist networks, appealing to viewers interested in in-depth information and cultural content.
History
Rai 3 began broadcasting on 15 December 1979 as Rete 3, conceived with a strong regional dimension: it was launched together with RAI’s network of regional production centres, and decentralised programming was central to its original mission. The channel adopted the Rai 3 name in the 1980s and gradually built a national identity around journalism, satire and cultural programming, while retaining its regional news windows. Over subsequent decades it became known for pioneering talk shows, investigative strands and documentary series that shaped Italian public debate.
Programming
The channel’s schedule combines news and current affairs, documentaries, cultural magazines, satire, films and quality drama. Its national newscast, TG3, is complemented by the TGR, RAI’s regional news service, which provides daily local bulletins for each Italian region in dedicated slots on Rai 3. Long-running current affairs and factual programmes, along with science and history documentaries, are a hallmark of the network, and the channel has also been an important outlet for political satire and public-interest journalism within Italian television.
Significance
Rai 3 fulfils a core part of RAI’s public service remit, guaranteeing space for culture, education, regional identity and investigative reporting in the Italian media landscape. Its regional news structure makes it unique among Italy’s national generalist channels, connecting national broadcasting with local communities across the country. Together with Rai 1 and Rai 2, it forms the backbone of Italian public television, and its tradition of rigorous journalism and cultural programming has earned it a loyal audience. The channel is distributed nationally on digital terrestrial television and satellite, and is also accessible through RAI’s streaming platform RaiPlay.
