Overview

MBC 1 is the flagship general-entertainment channel of MBC Group, the largest media company in the Middle East and North Africa. Broadcasting in Arabic via satellite across the Arab world, it offers a family-oriented mix of drama series, talent and reality formats, talk shows, films and news bulletins. History

MBC 1 traces its origins to the Middle East Broadcasting Center, which launched in London in 1991 as the first independent pan-Arab satellite television channel. The venture, backed by Saudi investors, transformed Arab media by offering programming across borders at a time when most Arab television was state-run and nationally confined. The company relocated to Dubai Media City in the early 2000s, where it expanded into a multi-channel group, and in recent years MBC Group has moved its headquarters to Riyadh as part of Saudi Arabia’s push to develop its domestic media industry.

Programming

The channel’s schedule centres on Arabic entertainment for the whole family. It is known for major pan-Arab versions of global talent formats, including Arab Idol and Arabs Got Talent, and for high-profile talk shows and social programmes. Drama is a cornerstone, with a peak during Ramadan, when MBC 1 premieres some of the season’s most-watched Arabic series; dubbed Turkish dramas have also been a popular fixture. The lineup is completed by game shows, films and regular news bulletins.

As the successor to the first pan-Arab satellite channel, MBC 1 holds a landmark place in the history of Arab media and remains one of the most-watched entertainment channels in the region.
