Overview
RTL Television, commonly known simply as RTL, is the flagship channel of RTL Deutschland and one of the most-watched commercial television channels in Germany. It is part of the international RTL Group, which is majority-owned by the Bertelsmann media conglomerate. Funded by advertising, RTL built its identity on popular entertainment — game shows, reality formats, soaps and big live events — combined with a substantial news and magazine operation, positioning itself as the leading private alternative to Germany’s public broadcasters.
History
RTL launched on 2 January 1984 under the name RTL plus, in the first days of private broadcasting in Germany, drawing on the heritage of Radio Télévision Luxembourg. Initially broadcasting from Luxembourg with limited reach, it moved its operations to Cologne in 1988 and expanded rapidly as cable and satellite distribution spread. During the 1990s it became Germany’s most popular channel among younger viewers and the anchor of a growing family of stations, including RTL Zwei, VOX and n-tv. Its streaming ambitions are now concentrated in the RTL+ platform, which combines the group’s television content with originals.
Programming
RTL’s schedule is defined by long-running hits. The quiz show Wer wird Millionär?, hosted for decades by Günther Jauch, and the casting show Deutschland sucht den Superstar are among Germany’s best-known entertainment formats, alongside the jungle reality show Ich bin ein Star – Holt mich hier raus!. The daily soap Gute Zeiten, schlechte Zeiten has run since the early 1990s. News and information are anchored by RTL Aktuell, the channel’s main evening bulletin, and the breakfast programme Guten Morgen Deutschland. RTL has also been a major sports broadcaster, known for its high-profile coverage of events such as Formula 1 and football.
Significance
RTL was a driving force in establishing commercial television in Germany and reshaped viewing habits with formats that public broadcasters had not offered. As the centrepiece of Europe’s largest commercial broadcasting group, it remains a bellwether for the German advertising market and a key player in the consolidation of national streaming services through RTL+.
