Al Arabiya

Al Arabiya is a news TV channel from United Arab Emirates, owned by MBC Group, broadcasting since 2003.

Overview

Al Arabiya is a Saudi-owned, Arabic-language news channel serving audiences across the Arab world and beyond. Operating from Dubai Media City, it provides 24-hour coverage of politics, business, and regional and international affairs, and is one of the two most influential pan-Arab news channels alongside Qatar’s Al Jazeera. It forms part of the portfolio of MBC Group, the largest media company in the Middle East.

History

Al Arabiya launched in March 2003, shortly before the start of the Iraq War, backed by Saudi investors associated with the MBC broadcasting group. It was conceived as a rival to Al Jazeera, offering an alternative editorial voice in the fiercely competitive pan-Arab news market that emerged with satellite television. The channel grew rapidly during the major regional stories of the 2000s and 2010s, including the Iraq War and the Arab uprisings, and expanded its business coverage through the sister channel Al Arabiya Al Hadath and dedicated business programming. Its digital arm, including an English-language news website, extended the brand to online and international audiences.

Programming

The channel’s output is built around continuous news bulletins and breaking-news coverage, supported by political talk shows, interview programmes, documentaries and business segments. It maintains correspondents and bureaus across the Middle East and in major world capitals, giving it extensive on-the-ground coverage of the region’s biggest stories. Special event programming covers elections, summits and conflicts across the Arab world.

Significance

Al Arabiya is one of the defining institutions of pan-Arab satellite news, watched by millions across the Middle East and North Africa. Its rivalry with Al Jazeera has often mirrored the broader regional dynamics between Saudi Arabia and Qatar, making the channel an important reference point for understanding Arab media and politics. Frequently cited by international outlets and policymakers, it remains a central source of news in Arabic and a key element of MBC Group’s dominance in Middle Eastern broadcasting.
