Overview
CGTN (China Global Television Network) is an English-language international news channel headquartered in Beijing. It is the flagship of a multilanguage international broadcasting group operated by China’s state broadcaster under China Media Group, with sister channels in Spanish, French, Arabic and Russian. Aimed at audiences outside mainland China, CGTN provides rolling news, business coverage, documentaries and current-affairs programming, explicitly presenting global events from a Chinese perspective. As a state-run outlet, its editorial line reflects the positions of the Chinese government.
History
CGTN was launched on 31 December 2016 as a rebranding of CCTV News, the international English-language service of China Central Television, whose English channel had operated since 2000 under the earlier name CCTV-9. The relaunch was part of a broader effort to expand China’s international media presence and “tell China’s story well” to global audiences. In 2018 the channel’s parent operations were consolidated into China Media Group, the state media conglomerate combining CCTV with national radio services. CGTN has since built production centres outside China, including operations in Washington, London and Nairobi, and its regulatory status has at times drawn scrutiny from broadcasting authorities in Western countries.
Programming
CGTN’s output centres on hourly news bulletins covering Chinese and international affairs, alongside business programming that tracks the Chinese economy and global markets. Current-affairs discussion shows feature analysts and commentators debating international relations, trade and development, with particular attention to Asia, Africa and the Global South. Documentaries explore Chinese culture, history, technology and development projects, while digital output on the CGTN website and app extends the channel’s reach to online audiences worldwide.
Significance
CGTN is the most visible instrument of China’s ambition to compete with established international broadcasters such as CNN International, BBC World News and Al Jazeera English. Its global expansion reflects the growing role of state-backed international channels in the contest over global public opinion. For viewers and analysts, CGTN offers a direct window on how China presents itself and interprets world events, making it a significant, and frequently debated, presence in the international news ecosystem.
