BBC News is the rolling news television channel of the British Broadcasting Corporation, providing round-the-clock coverage of UK and international affairs. In 2023 the BBC merged its domestic news channel with its international BBC World News service to create a single, globally distributed channel under the BBC News banner.

History

The domestic channel launched in 1997 as BBC News 24, part of the corporation’s move into continuous news in the digital era. It was rebranded simply as “BBC News” in 2008. Its international counterpart, BBC World News, evolved from BBC World Service Television, which began in the early 1990s. The 2023 merger unified the two into one channel serving audiences at home and abroad.

Programming

The channel’s schedule is built around regular bulletins, live press conferences and rolling coverage of major stories. Flagship strands include business and markets reporting, sport, and signature interview and analysis programmes. During major events — elections, conflicts, royal occasions and breaking incidents — the channel switches to continuous live coverage.
