ANT1

Overview

ANT1 (Antenna) is one of the most prominent private television channels in Greece and the flagship broadcaster of the Antenna Group. It offers a full general-entertainment schedule aimed at a broad national audience, combining daily news bulletins, scripted comedy and drama, talk and lifestyle shows, and licensed international entertainment formats. Alongside its terrestrial service, the channel supplies content to the group’s streaming platform ANT1+ and maintains international feeds for Greek-speaking communities abroad.

History

ANT1 launched at the end of 1989, during the period when Greek broadcasting opened up to private operators after decades of state monopoly. It quickly established itself as one of the two dominant commercial channels in the country, competing closely with Mega Channel through the 1990s and 2000s. Over the years ANT1 built a reputation for popular Greek comedy series and large-scale entertainment productions, while the wider Antenna Group expanded into radio, digital media and international broadcasting. The channel has remained under the control of the Kyriakou family’s Antenna Group since its foundation.

Programming

ANT1’s schedule is anchored by its main evening news bulletin and complemented by morning magazine and daytime talk programming. The channel is especially associated with long-running Greek comedy series such as Konstantinou kai Elenis and To Kafe tis Charas, which remain widely rerun and culturally influential. Its prime-time lineup also features local adaptations of international formats, including talent and reality shows such as Your Face Sounds Familiar, along with game shows, dramas and acquired films and series.

Significance

As one of the first private broadcasters in Greece, ANT1 helped define the country’s commercial television era and has consistently ranked among the most-watched national channels. Its comedies form part of the shared reference points of modern Greek popular culture, and its news operation is a major voice in the Greek media landscape. Through international satellite feeds and streaming, ANT1 also serves the sizeable Greek diaspora, extending its role well beyond the domestic market.
