Antena 3

Overview

Antena 3 is one of Spain’s principal private television channels and the flagship network of the Atresmedia group. A generalist channel aimed at a broad national audience, it competes at the top of the Spanish ratings with a schedule built on news, entertainment formats, game shows, fiction and films. Its headquarters and main studios are located in San Sebastián de los Reyes, near Madrid.

History

Antena 3 began regular broadcasts on 25 January 1990, making it one of the first private television channels in Spain following the liberalisation of the country’s broadcasting market at the end of the 1980s. Ownership evolved over the following decades, and the channel eventually became the centrepiece of Atresmedia, the media group formed when Antena 3’s parent company merged with the operator of laSexta in 2012. Over its history the channel has grown from a challenger to the public broadcaster into one of the most watched networks in Spain, with its evening news broadcasts achieving market-leading audiences in recent years.

Programming

The channel’s schedule combines its highly rated news service, Antena 3 Noticias, with successful daily formats such as the game shows Pasapalabra and La ruleta de la suerte, and the access-prime-time talk and entertainment show El Hormiguero, one of Spanish television’s biggest nightly programmes. Antena 3 also broadcasts Spanish drama series and telenovelas, reality and talent formats, films and special events, and its fiction output has travelled widely to international markets and streaming platforms.

Antena 3 holds a central place in Spanish commercial television, both as a ratings leader and as the flagship of Atresmedia, one of the country’s two dominant private broadcasting groups. Its pioneering role in the era of private television, the strength of its news division and the international success of its drama productions have made it one of the most influential brands in Spanish-language media.
