Canale 5

Canale 5 is a general TV channel from Italy, owned by MFE – MediaForEurope (Mediaset), broadcasting since 1980.

Overview

Canale 5 is the flagship television channel of Mediaset, Italy’s largest commercial broadcaster, now part of the MFE – MediaForEurope group. Positioned as a generalist network for a broad family audience, it is one of the most watched channels in Italy and the principal private-sector rival to public broadcaster RAI’s flagship Rai 1. Its schedule spans entertainment, drama, films, reality formats and news.

History

Canale 5 traces its origins to 1980, when Silvio Berlusconi developed the channel from a local Milan-area broadcaster into a national commercial network, initially distributing programmes across a syndication of local stations. It became the cornerstone of the Fininvest television empire, which grew into Mediaset, and played a decisive role in ending the state monopoly era of Italian television. Through the 1980s and 1990s Canale 5 established itself as Italy’s leading commercial channel, importing international formats and building major in-house entertainment franchises. Its news operation, TG5, launched in 1992 and became one of the country’s most watched newscasts.

Programming

The channel’s line-up is anchored by big entertainment and reality formats, among them the Italian editions of Grande Fratello and long-running talent and variety shows such as Amici and C’è posta per te. The satirical news programme Striscia la notizia has been an access-prime-time institution on the network for decades. Canale 5 also broadcasts Italian and international drama, telenovelas and films, alongside the daily bulletins of TG5 and major live events, including selected football coverage over the years.

Significance

Canale 5 transformed Italian broadcasting by proving that a national commercial network could compete head-to-head with public television, reshaping the market into the RAI–Mediaset duopoly that has defined Italian TV for decades. It remains central to Mediaset’s business and identity, commanding large prime-time audiences and premium advertising. As part of MFE – MediaForEurope, the channel continues to anchor the group’s Italian portfolio, with its content widely available on digital terrestrial television, satellite and the Mediaset Infinity streaming platform.
