Overview
CBC Television is the English-language television network of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Canada’s national public broadcaster. Operating as a Crown corporation funded through a combination of government appropriation and advertising revenue, the network serves audiences from coast to coast with a schedule built around Canadian-made news, drama, comedy, documentary and factual programming. Its mandate under the Broadcasting Act is to inform, enlighten and entertain, and to reflect Canada and its regions to national and regional audiences.
History
CBC Television began broadcasting on 6 September 1952, when CBFT in Montreal signed on, followed two days later by CBLT in Toronto. The network expanded rapidly through the 1950s via owned-and-operated stations and private affiliates, bringing television to communities across the country’s vast geography. Over the decades CBC Television became a central institution in Canadian cultural life, producing landmark drama, current affairs and sports coverage. Its English-language network operations are centred at the Canadian Broadcasting Centre in Toronto, while the corporation’s head office is in Ottawa. The launch of the CBC Gem streaming platform extended the network’s reach to digital audiences.
Programming
The network’s news output is anchored by The National, the CBC’s flagship nightly newscast, supported by investigative and consumer programmes such as The Fifth Estate and Marketplace. CBC Television is also home to popular Canadian scripted series, including Murdoch Mysteries, Heartland, and the internationally acclaimed comedies Schitt’s Creek and Kim’s Convenience. Unscripted staples include Dragons’ Den, while Hockey Night in Canada, long associated with the network, remains one of the most recognised brands in Canadian broadcasting. Children’s programming, arts coverage and regional news round out the schedule.
Significance
CBC Television plays a role in Canada comparable to that of other major public broadcasters worldwide: it is a primary commissioner of domestic drama and comedy, a trusted source of national and local news, and a unifying platform for major national events, elections and the Olympic Games. By prioritising Canadian stories and talent in a market dominated by American media, the network remains central to the country’s cultural identity and to the Canadian broadcasting system as a whole.
