CTV

CTV is a general TV channel from Canada, owned by Bell Media, broadcasting since 1961.

Overview

CTV is an English-language commercial television network in Canada and the country’s largest privately owned broadcaster. Owned by Bell Media, a division of BCE Inc., the network operates owned-and-operated stations in major markets across the country and consistently ranks among Canada’s most-watched networks. Its schedule combines a strong national and local news operation with Canadian-produced entertainment and simulcasts of high-profile American series.

History

CTV launched on 1 October 1961 as Canada’s first private national television network, formed as a cooperative of independent stations to compete with the publicly owned CBC. Over the following decades the network’s ownership structure evolved from a station cooperative into a conventional corporate network. Control eventually consolidated under BCE, and CTV became the cornerstone of Bell Media’s broadcasting portfolio. Along the way the network built a reputation for news and sports coverage and became the Canadian home of many of television’s biggest entertainment franchises.

Programming

News is central to the CTV brand. CTV National News is one of the country’s most-watched national newscasts, complemented by the long-running investigative newsmagazine W5 and extensive local news programming from CTV stations in markets from Vancouver to Halifax. Canadian originals have included the beloved sitcom Corner Gas, the drama Flashpoint and the reality competition The Amazing Race Canada. The network also carries a substantial lineup of popular American dramas, comedies and reality franchises, often simulcast with their US broadcasts, along with daytime and morning shows such as Your Morning.

Significance

As the leading private broadcaster in Canada, CTV occupies a distinctive position in the national media landscape: it is both a major commissioner of Canadian content and the principal conduit through which American network programming reaches Canadian free-to-air audiences. Its news division is among the most trusted in the country, and its local stations remain important sources of regional journalism. Within Bell Media, CTV anchors a broader family of channels and digital platforms, ensuring the brand’s continued prominence as viewing shifts toward streaming.
