Overview
Das Erste (“The First”) is the principal national television channel of ARD, the working association of Germany’s regional public-law broadcasters. Its schedule is assembled cooperatively: the regional members — such as WDR, BR, NDR and SWR — contribute programmes in agreed proportions, with overall coordination handled by the ARD programme directorate in Munich. Financed chiefly by the household broadcasting contribution, Das Erste is one of Germany’s most-watched channels and, together with ZDF, forms the backbone of the country’s public service television.
History
Das Erste traces its origins to the early 1950s, when regular television broadcasting resumed in post-war Germany; a nationwide joint ARD service was established in the 1950s under the name Deutsches Fernsehen, later Erstes Deutsches Fernsehen. The federal structure of ARD, created deliberately after the Second World War to prevent centralised control of broadcasting, has shaped the channel ever since. Over the decades it introduced many of German television’s defining institutions, expanded to cover the eastern states after reunification, and adopted the shortened brand “Das Erste” in the 1990s. Today its content is also available on demand through the ARD Mediathek.
Programming
The channel’s best-known programme is Tagesschau, the 8 p.m. news bulletin that has been a fixture of German life for decades and remains the country’s most authoritative news broadcast, alongside the later analysis programme Tagesthemen. Sunday evenings belong to Tatort, the long-running crime drama series produced in rotation by ARD’s regional broadcasters and a genuine national ritual. The schedule also features political talk shows, investigative documentaries, television films, entertainment shows and extensive coverage of major sporting events, as well as daily soaps and regional programming windows.
Significance
Das Erste embodies Germany’s decentralised model of public broadcasting, in which independent regional institutions jointly sustain a national service. Its news programmes set the agenda for public debate, while formats such as Tatort demonstrate how a federated system can produce a shared national culture. As linear viewing declines, the channel anchors ARD’s transition to digital distribution, ensuring that public service content remains central to German media.
