Overview
DR1 is the principal television channel of DR (Danmarks Radio), Denmark’s national public service broadcaster and one of the oldest broadcasting organisations in Europe. The channel offers an advertising-free, generalist schedule of news, current affairs, drama, documentaries, entertainment and cultural programming, and it is consistently among the most-watched channels in Denmark. DR is publicly funded and operates from DR Byen, its broadcasting complex in Copenhagen, with DR1 serving as the organisation’s broad mainstream flagship.
History
DR began regular television broadcasting in the early 1950s, making its television service one of the pioneers in the Nordic region. For decades it was Denmark’s only television channel, holding a national monopoly until the launch of the competing public-commercial channel TV 2 in 1988. The main service took the name DR1 in 1996, when the second channel DR2 was introduced. The channel completed the transition to digital terrestrial broadcasting in 2009, when Denmark switched off analogue television, and its programming is now also distributed on demand through the DRTV streaming service.
Programming
DR1’s schedule is anchored by TV Avisen, DR’s flagship television news programme, alongside current affairs, consumer and documentary strands. The channel achieved international renown for its Sunday-night drama slot, which produced series such as Forbrydelsen (The Killing), the political drama Borgen and, together with SVT, the co-production Broen (The Bridge). Danish classics such as the historical serial Matador remain cultural touchstones, and the channel also broadcasts entertainment shows, the traditional Christmas calendar series and coverage of major national events and royal occasions.
Significance
DR1 is central to Danish public life, functioning as the nation’s common reference point for news, elections and shared traditions. Its drama department redefined the global reputation of Danish television, spearheading the “Nordic noir” wave and proving that a small country’s public broadcaster could set international creative standards. Through DRTV, the channel continues to adapt the public service mission to on-demand viewing habits while sustaining its role as Denmark’s most established broadcaster.
