Overview
KBS1 is the primary television channel of the Korean Broadcasting System, South Korea’s national public broadcaster. Funded largely through a television licence fee and carrying no commercial advertising, the channel concentrates on news, current affairs, documentaries, education and programming that reflects Korean culture and history. It serves as the country’s principal public-service channel and its designated broadcaster for emergencies and major national events.
History
The channel’s history begins with the launch of KBS television on 31 December 1961, when the state broadcaster inaugurated South Korea’s first full-scale national television service. Following the government-mandated consolidation of Korean broadcasting in 1980, KBS reorganised its services into two channels, with KBS1 designated the main public-service channel and KBS2 oriented toward entertainment. KBS1 removed commercial advertising in 1994, reinforcing its licence-fee-funded public mission. Based at KBS headquarters in Yeouido, Seoul, the channel has since expanded through digital terrestrial broadcasting and online streaming, while KBS World carries its programming to international audiences.
Programming
KBS1’s schedule is anchored by KBS News 9, one of South Korea’s most established evening newscasts, supported by extensive daytime news, current-affairs debate and investigative programming. The channel is known for large-scale historical dramas drawing on Korean history, as well as long-running national favourites such as the travelling amateur singing contest National Singing Contest (Jeonguk Noraejarang), one of the longest-running programmes on Korean television. Documentaries, agricultural and regional programming, coverage of state occasions and educational content complete a line-up designed to serve audiences that commercial channels may overlook.
Significance
As the flagship of the national public broadcaster, KBS1 occupies a foundational position in South Korean media. It is the reference channel for elections, disasters and moments of national importance, and its ad-free, licence-funded model distinguishes it within a fiercely competitive broadcasting market. Its historical dramas and cultural programming have played a lasting role in popularising Korean history and traditions at home, complementing the global rise of Korean content, while its news operation remains among the most watched and most scrutinised in the country.
