Mega Channel

Mega Channel is a general TV channel from Greece, owned by Alter Ego Media, broadcasting since 1989.

Overview

Mega Channel is a Greek general-entertainment television channel and a historic name in the country’s broadcasting landscape. It was the first private television station to go on air in Greece and for decades ranked among the nation’s most-watched channels. Its schedule combines news bulletins, original Greek fiction, entertainment shows and acquired programming, and much of its celebrated series library remains a fixture of Greek television.

History

Mega Channel began broadcasting in November 1989, marking the end of the state monopoly on television in Greece. Through the 1990s and 2000s it was a dominant force in Greek ratings, producing many of the country’s most successful drama and comedy series and building one of the strongest fiction catalogues in Greek television. Following severe financial difficulties, the channel ceased broadcasting in 2018. It returned to the air in February 2020 after being acquired by Alter Ego Media, the media group controlled by businessman Evangelos Marinakis, and re-established itself as a major national broadcaster.

Programming

Mega’s identity has long been tied to original Greek fiction. Its archive includes some of the most beloved comedies and dramas in Greek television history, among them Sto Para Pente, which remains a cultural touchstone years after its original run. The modern schedule features the channel’s main evening news, morning and daytime magazine shows, new Greek drama and comedy productions, entertainment formats, and films and series from international distributors.

Significance

As the channel that inaugurated private television in Greece, Mega occupies a special place in the country’s media history. Its productions shaped the golden age of Greek television fiction, and its closure in 2018 was widely seen as the end of an era — making its 2020 revival a notable event in Greek broadcasting. Today Mega again competes at the top of the national ratings and continues to invest in original Greek content, while its classic series endure as some of the most rewatched programmes in the country.
