MSNBC

MSNBC is a news TV channel from United States, broadcasting since 1996.

Overview

MSNBC is an American news-based television channel distributed on cable, satellite and streaming television platforms across the United States. Based at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York City, it combines breaking news coverage with a heavy emphasis on political analysis and opinion programming, and it is consistently one of the most-watched news channels in the country. Its editorial identity is closely associated with progressive-leaning commentary, particularly in its prime-time lineup.

History

MSNBC launched on 15 July 1996 as a joint venture between Microsoft and NBC, conceived as a cable and online news partnership at the dawn of the internet era; the name combines Microsoft’s “MS” with “NBC”. NBC later assumed full control of the television channel, and Microsoft’s remaining stakes in the venture were unwound over the following years, with the msnbc.com website eventually separated from the channel. During the 2000s the network gradually shifted from a general rolling-news format toward analysis and opinion, a repositioning that gave it a distinct identity alongside its competitors CNN and Fox News and significantly improved its ratings.

Programming

MSNBC’s daytime schedule focuses on live news coverage of national politics, major breaking stories and Washington developments. Mornings are anchored by the long-running discussion programme Morning Joe, while prime time features signature opinion and analysis shows, most famously The Rachel Maddow Show, one of the highest-rated programmes in American cable news. The channel provides extensive live coverage of elections, presidential debates, congressional hearings and other major political events, drawing on a large roster of correspondents, analysts and contributors.

Significance

MSNBC is one of the three major cable news channels in the United States and a defining voice in the country’s polarised news environment. Its evolution from a technology-era joint venture into an opinion-led political network mirrors the broader transformation of American cable news, where audience loyalty is built around hosts and perspective as much as around reporting. For millions of viewers it serves as the primary lens on US politics, and its election-night coverage and prime-time commentary play a visible role in the national political conversation.
