NBC

NBC is a general TV channel from United States, owned by NBCUniversal (Comcast), broadcasting since 1939.

Overview

NBC (the National Broadcasting Company) is one of the major commercial broadcast television networks in the United States. It began regular television broadcasting in 1939, having grown out of the pioneering NBC radio network founded in 1926. NBC is owned by NBCUniversal, a subsidiary of Comcast.

The network is known by its distinctive peacock logo, introduced in the 1950s to promote colour broadcasting.

History

NBC was the first major broadcast network in the United States and played a central role in the development of both radio and television. It introduced many enduring formats, from network newscasts to morning and late-night programming, and helped pioneer colour television in the 1950s and 1960s.

In the streaming era, NBCUniversal launched Peacock, which carries NBC programming on demand alongside original content.

Programming

NBC’s schedule spans scripted drama and comedy, reality and competition formats, live sport, and a deep news and current-affairs operation. Long-running staples include the morning programme Today, the late-night institution The Tonight Show, the sketch series Saturday Night Live, and major sports broadcasts including the Olympic Games in the United States.

Significance

As one of America’s “Big Three” legacy networks, NBC has shaped popular culture for generations. Its news division, NBC News, is among the most established in the country, and its entertainment brands remain central to the US television landscape.
