NDTV 24x7

NDTV 24x7 is a news TV channel from India, owned by NDTV (New Delhi Television Ltd), broadcasting since 2003.

Overview

NDTV 24x7 is an English-language news channel operated by New Delhi Television Ltd (NDTV), one of India’s most recognised broadcast news organisations. Broadcasting around the clock from New Delhi, the channel covers Indian national politics, business, international affairs, sport and culture, and serves as the English-language flagship of a group that also runs Hindi-language news services. It reaches viewers across India on cable and direct-to-home satellite platforms and internationally through distribution deals and digital streaming.

History

NDTV was founded in 1988 by the economist-journalist Prannoy Roy and Radhika Roy, initially as a production house whose programme The World This Week became a landmark of Indian television journalism. After years producing news for other broadcasters, the company launched its own channels, with NDTV 24x7 debuting in 2003 as an independent English news service alongside its Hindi sibling NDTV India. The channel built a reputation for polished presentation and interview-driven journalism. In late 2022, the Adani Group acquired a controlling stake in NDTV, a change of ownership that drew wide attention and was followed by the departure of the founders from their executive roles.

Programming

The schedule is built around live news bulletins through the day, flagship prime-time news and analysis programmes, and extended coverage of elections, union budgets and major breaking events. Long-running discussion formats such as The Big Fight and the town-hall style We The People became fixtures of Indian English-language news television. The channel also produces business news segments, technology and car shows, and lifestyle and documentary programming, supported by bureaus and correspondents across India.

Significance

NDTV 24x7 helped define independent English-language news television in India and trained a generation of the country’s prominent journalists and anchors. For international audiences and India’s English-speaking urban viewers alike, it has long been a familiar window on Indian politics and society. Its election coverage and studio debates have been influential in shaping public discourse, and the 2022 change in ownership made the channel itself a subject of debate about media independence in India, underscoring its prominence in the national landscape.
