Rai 1

Rai 1 is a general TV channel from Italy, owned by Rai (Radiotelevisione Italiana), broadcasting since 1954.

Overview

Rai 1 is the flagship television channel of Rai (Radiotelevisione Italiana), Italy’s national public broadcaster. It began broadcasting on 3 January 1954, marking the start of regular television in Italy, and remains one of the most watched channels in the country.

History

Rai held a monopoly on Italian television for its first decades and played a defining role in the cultural and linguistic unification of post-war Italy, helping to spread standard Italian across a country of many regional dialects. Rai 1 has remained the broadcaster’s premier general-interest channel throughout.

Programming

Rai 1 broadcasts a broad mix of primetime drama, variety and entertainment shows, the flagship Rai news service TG1, and coverage of major national events. It traditionally carries the Sanremo Music Festival, one of the most important events in Italian popular culture, as well as significant religious and state occasions.

Significance

As the principal channel of Italy’s public broadcaster, Rai 1 occupies a central place in Italian cultural life. Its general-interest programming and major national broadcasts draw some of the largest audiences in the country.
