Overview
RTP1 is the flagship television channel of Rádio e Televisão de Portugal (RTP), the Portuguese public service broadcaster. As the country’s first and oldest television network, it provides a generalist schedule of news, current affairs, entertainment, drama, documentaries and live events for a broad national audience, and it also reaches Portuguese communities abroad through RTP’s international services.
History
RTP began regular television broadcasts on 7 March 1957, making the channel now known as RTP1 the pioneer of television in Portugal. For more than three decades it operated within a public monopoly, joined by a second public channel in 1968, before private competitors SIC and TVI entered the market in the early 1990s. The channel has been rebranded several times over its history — including periods as Canal 1 — before settling on the RTP1 identity. Throughout political and technological change, from the dictatorship era through the 1974 revolution to the digital age, it has remained the reference channel of Portuguese public broadcasting.
Programming
RTP1’s schedule is built around its news operation, led by the long-running evening newscast Telejornal, together with morning and daytime magazine shows, talk programmes, Portuguese drama and comedy, documentaries, films and entertainment formats. The channel covers major national events and ceremonies, broadcasts significant sporting occasions, and carries Portugal’s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest. Its commitment to Portuguese-language fiction and factual content forms a core part of RTP’s public service remit.
Significance
As Portugal’s original television channel and the flagship of the public broadcaster, RTP1 occupies a foundational place in the country’s media history and national culture. It provides an independent public news service, supports domestic production and guarantees universal free access to information and entertainment. Although it competes with strong private networks, RTP1 retains an influential position in Portuguese broadcasting, and its programmes are widely available via digital terrestrial television, cable, satellite and the RTP Play streaming platform.
