Overview

SIC (Sociedade Independente de Comunicação) is one of Portugal’s leading television channels and the flagship broadcasting asset of the Impresa media group. A generalist free-to-air network, it competes at the top of the Portuguese ratings with a schedule centred on news, telenovelas, entertainment shows and films, and it has frequently held audience leadership in the Portuguese market.

History

SIC began broadcasting on 6 October 1992, becoming the first private television channel in Portugal and ending the long monopoly of the public broadcaster RTP. Founded under the leadership of Francisco Pinto Balsemão, a former Portuguese prime minister and founder of Impresa, the channel grew rapidly during the 1990s, aided by a landmark partnership with Brazil’s TV Globo that brought hugely popular Brazilian telenovelas to its prime time. SIC became Portugal’s most watched channel within a few years of launch and has since remained one of the country’s two dominant commercial networks alongside TVI, later expanding into a family of thematic channels and digital services.

Programming

The channel’s schedule combines a strong news operation, led by the evening newscast Jornal da Noite, with daytime magazine and talk shows, entertainment and reality formats, comedy, films and imported series. Fiction is central to SIC’s identity: it broadcasts both Brazilian telenovelas and an expanding slate of Portuguese-produced novelas and drama, which regularly rank among the country’s most watched programmes.

Significance

SIC transformed Portuguese television by introducing private competition, accelerating the modernisation of news and entertainment across the market. Its early success reshaped viewing habits and forced a broader renewal of Portuguese broadcasting in the 1990s. Today, as the flagship of Impresa, SIC anchors one of Portugal’s most important media groups, complementing the main channel with thematic offshoots such as its news channel and international feeds for Portuguese-speaking audiences abroad. The channel is available nationwide free-to-air and on cable, satellite and IPTV platforms, with streaming provided through the group’s OPTO service.
