SVT1

SVT1 is a general TV channel from Sweden, owned by Sveriges Television (SVT), broadcasting since 1956.

Overview

SVT1 is the primary television channel of Sveriges Television (SVT), Sweden’s national public service broadcaster. It is the country’s oldest television channel and consistently among its most watched, offering a broad, advertising-free schedule of news, current affairs, drama, entertainment, documentaries and children’s programming. SVT is funded through a public service fee collected via the tax system, and its channels are complemented by SVT Play, one of the earliest and most successful public broadcaster streaming services in Europe.

History

Regular television broadcasting began in Sweden in 1956 under the public broadcasting monopoly, and the original service evolved into what is now SVT1. When a second public channel, TV2, launched in 1969, the two operated as friendly rivals within the same organisation, stimulating programme quality through internal competition. Sveriges Television was established as a separate company in the late 1970s, and the channels were reorganised in the 1990s with SVT1 as the broad, mainstream flagship. The channel converted to digital terrestrial broadcasting in the 2000s as Sweden became one of the first countries to switch off analogue television.

Programming

SVT1 is home to Sweden’s leading news programmes, including the long-running evening bulletin Rapport and the analysis programme Aktuellt, together with regional news windows. Its entertainment line-up features some of the country’s most beloved institutions: the annual song competition Melodifestivalen, which selects Sweden’s Eurovision entry, the summer singalong Allsång på Skansen, and the quiz show På spåret. The channel also broadcasts the traditional Christmas calendar series for children, acclaimed Nordic drama, investigative journalism and major national events.

Significance

SVT1 occupies a central place in Swedish public life, serving as the nation’s shared stage for news, elections, royal occasions and cultural traditions. Its drama output has contributed to the international standing of Nordic television, and events such as Melodifestivalen draw some of the largest audiences in Swedish media. As part of SVT’s early and ambitious move into streaming, the channel has helped public service broadcasting remain relevant to younger, on-demand audiences.
