Overview

TRT World is the English-language international news channel of the Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT), Turkey’s public broadcaster. Broadcasting around the clock from its headquarters in Istanbul, it delivers world news, current affairs, documentaries and discussion programmes to a global audience. The channel positions itself as a voice from Turkey and the wider region in the international news market, alongside broadcasters such as BBC World News, Al Jazeera English and France 24.

History

TRT World began broadcasting in 2015 as part of TRT’s strategy to expand its international presence and offer a Turkish perspective on global affairs in English. It built a newsroom drawing journalists from many countries and established reporting hubs beyond Istanbul, including bureaus in major world capitals. The channel expanded steadily on satellite and cable platforms internationally, while investing heavily in digital output — video explainers, documentaries and social media journalism — to reach younger, online audiences.

Programming

The schedule is built around rolling news bulletins covering international politics, business, culture and sport, supplemented by flagship discussion and analysis programmes. The channel produces in-depth current-affairs strands and documentaries, with particular attention to Turkey, the Middle East, the Balkans, Africa and Asia, as well as underreported stories from the Global South. Digital-first formats and explainer journalism form a significant part of its output, distributed through its website and social platforms in addition to the linear channel.

Significance

TRT World represents Turkey’s most ambitious effort to participate in the global, English-language news arena, extending the country’s public broadcaster to an international audience.
