TV Globo

TV Globo is a general TV channel from Brazil, owned by Grupo Globo, broadcasting since 1965.

Overview

TV Globo is a Brazilian free-to-air television network and the flagship broadcast property of Grupo Globo, Latin America’s largest media conglomerate. Headquartered in Rio de Janeiro, it is Brazil’s most-watched television network and ranks among the largest commercial networks in the world by audience and production output. Through owned stations and affiliates it reaches virtually the entire Brazilian population, and its productions are exported to well over a hundred countries.

History

TV Globo began broadcasting on 26 April 1965 in Rio de Janeiro, founded by the journalist and businessman Roberto Marinho. The network grew rapidly during the following decades, building a national affiliate system and investing heavily in in-house production at a scale unmatched in Latin America. Its Estúdios Globo complex became one of the largest television production centres outside the United States. Globo’s polished production standards, dominant audience share and dependable prime-time formula — newscast flanked by telenovelas — made it the central institution of Brazilian television, a position it has retained into the streaming era with the launch of the Globoplay platform.

Programming

The network is world-famous for its telenovelas, which anchor prime time and have included landmark titles such as Avenida Brasil and Pantanal, exported and adapted across the globe. News output is led by Jornal Nacional, on air since 1969 and long the most-watched news programme in Brazil, alongside morning and late-night news editions. The schedule also features the reality phenomenon Big Brother Brasil, variety and talk shows, comedy, and extensive sports coverage, particularly of Brazilian football, which occupies a central place in the network’s identity.

Significance

Few broadcasters anywhere match TV Globo’s cultural weight in its home market. Its telenovelas have shaped Brazilian popular culture, language and social debate for decades, while Jornal Nacional has served as the country’s common evening news reference across generations. As an exporter of drama and formats, Globo made Brazilian television a global commodity and established the telenovela as one of the world’s most successful programming genres. The network remains the benchmark against which all Brazilian television is measured.
