La 1 (TVE)

La 1 (TVE) is a general TV channel from Spain, owned by RTVE (Corporación de Radio y Televisión Española), broadcasting since 1956.

Overview

La 1 is the flagship television channel of RTVE, Spain’s national public broadcaster. It launched on 28 October 1956 as the first television service in Spain and remains the corporation’s principal general-interest channel.

History

Television Española held a monopoly on Spanish television for decades and played an important role in the country’s social and cultural life, including during its transition to democracy in the 1970s. La 1 has continued as the public broadcaster’s main channel through the arrival of private competitors and the shift to digital terrestrial television.

Programming

La 1 carries a broad schedule of news, primetime drama and series, entertainment and variety formats, and live coverage of major sporting and national events. Its news service, Telediario, is among the most watched in Spain, and the channel traditionally broadcasts significant state and cultural occasions.

Significance

As the lead channel of Spain’s public broadcaster, La 1 holds a central place in Spanish television. Its general-interest programming and national event coverage make it a key part of the country’s media landscape.
