TVN

Overview

TVN is one of Poland’s leading commercial television channels and the flagship of TVN Warner Bros. Discovery, the Polish operations of Warner Bros. Discovery. The channel is aimed at a broad, urban-leaning audience and combines a highly regarded news service with entertainment formats, lifestyle programming, drama series and films. It forms the core of a large family of thematic channels and the streaming service Player.

History

TVN began broadcasting in October 1997, founded by Polish entrepreneurs Mariusz Walter and Jan Wejchert as part of the ITI Group. It grew rapidly into one of the country’s top broadcasters and developed an influential news brand, including the 24-hour news channel TVN24 launched in 2001. Ownership later passed to international investors: the American company Scripps Networks Interactive acquired TVN in 2015, and through subsequent mergers the broadcaster became part of Discovery and then Warner Bros. Discovery. During debates over Polish media legislation in the early 2020s, TVN’s foreign ownership placed it at the centre of high-profile discussions about media freedom.

Programming

TVN’s schedule is anchored by Fakty, its main evening news bulletin and one of the most-watched news programmes in Poland. The channel is also known for successful local versions of international entertainment formats, including Mam talent! (Got Talent) and Top Model, along with the long-running culinary intervention show Kuchenne rewolucje hosted by Magda Gessler. Morning television is represented by Dzień dobry TVN, and the lineup includes Polish drama and comedy series, reality programming and acquired films.

Significance

TVN is consistently among the three most-watched channels in Poland and is widely regarded as a benchmark for production quality in Polish commercial television. Its news output, together with TVN24, plays a prominent role in the country’s public debate, and its entertainment formats have shaped Polish prime-time viewing for more than two decades. As part of Warner Bros. Discovery, it also links the Polish market to one of the world’s largest media companies.
