Overview

TVP1 (also known as Jedynka, “The One”) is the flagship television channel of Telewizja Polska, Poland’s public broadcaster. It is the oldest television channel in the country and offers a broad general-interest schedule of news and current affairs, Polish drama series, documentaries, films and family entertainment. As a public-service channel it carries national events, major ceremonies and coverage of significant moments in Polish public life.

History

TVP1 traces its origins to the very beginning of Polish television, with the first experimental broadcasts of Telewizja Polska in 1952 and regular programming developing over the following years. For decades it was the principal channel of state television, and after the political transformation of 1989 it continued as the leading channel of the reformed public broadcaster. It has since navigated the arrival of commercial competitors such as Polsat and TVN, the digital switchover, and recurring public debates about the independence and governance of Polish public media.

Programming

The channel’s schedule is built around its main news bulletin Wiadomości and the long-running early-evening news programme Teleexpress. Popular entertainment staples include the music game show Jaka to melodia?, while Polish drama is represented by long-running series such as the crime drama Ojciec Mateusz. TVP1 also broadcasts documentaries, feature films, religious programming including major national and papal events, and coverage of state ceremonies and international sporting occasions shared across TVP channels.

Significance

As the descendant of Poland’s first television service, TVP1 holds a foundational place in the country’s broadcasting history and remains one of the most-watched channels in Poland. It serves as the primary public-service outlet for national news and major live events, reaching audiences across every region through terrestrial, satellite, cable and online distribution.
